
Biography
Biao Xue is Professor of Violin in the Orchestral Department at the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, where he also serves as Head of the String Teaching and Research Office and supervises master’s students. He previously served as Concertmaster of the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra in Spain and the Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra. In recognition of his professional achievements, he has been designated a High-Level Talent in Hangzhou.
Education and Musical Background
His musical education combines the traditions of Eastern and Western classical music. He studied at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music before pursuing advanced studies at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music in the United States. This diverse academic background has shaped his approach to violin performance and music education, combining a solid technical foundation with a broad international perspective.
Artistic Achievements and Awards
Biao Xue has received numerous awards at national and international competitions. He won first prize in the Youth Division of the Kingsville International Young Performers Competition and second prize at the Kansas City International Violin Competition. In China, he received Fourth Prize at the Second National Violin Competition in 1984 and the Outstanding Performance Award in the chamber music category at the Fourth National Music Composition Competition in 1985.
In 2013, he received the inaugural Zhejiang Music Award, presented jointly by the Zhejiang Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Zhejiang Music Association.
International Performance Career
Biao Xue has collaborated with distinguished ensembles in China and abroad, including the China National Symphony Orchestra, the New American Chamber Orchestra, and the Granada Chamber Orchestra in Spain.
He has served as Concertmaster of the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra and the Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra, and has frequently been invited to appear as guest concertmaster with orchestras such as the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Xi’an Symphony Orchestra, Shaanxi Symphony Orchestra, and Qingdao Symphony Orchestra. Through his performances and orchestral leadership, he has contributed to the artistic development of ensembles across diverse musical settings.
Teaching and International Jury Work
Alongside his performing career, Biao Xue is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of violinists. His teaching combines high professional standards with an individual and supportive approach, helping young musicians develop their technical abilities and artistic expression.
His expertise has also led to invitations to serve on the juries of several international competitions and festivals, including the Qingdao International Violin Competition, the Khachaturian International Violin Competition, the Vienna World String Festival, and the Japan IYVC International Violin Competition.
Student Achievements
Biao Xue’s students have achieved notable success at international competitions. Chen Yimiao won first prize in the Junior Category at the 6th La Paz International Violin Competition in Spain. Hu Wenjing received third prize at the 2023 Kogan Violin Competition, second prize at the 2024 Grumiaux International Violin Competition in Belgium, and third prize in Violin Category A at the 2025 Hengqin Mozart International Music Week.
Cai Yingyi won the Gold Award at the 2023 Singapore International Solo & Chamber Music Competition, the Silver Award in the Junior Category at the 2024 Lingyun Music Awards, and the Gold Award at the 2025 Vienna World String Arts Festival. Li Yueyang received the Silver Award in the Youth Category at the 2024 Lingyun Music Awards, while Li Jiayin won First Prize in the Professional Category at the 2025 Incheon International Music Competition in South Korea.
Through his artistic career, international collaborations, and dedication to teaching, Biao Xue continues to contribute to the development of young violinists and to the wider international music community.
