Prof. Bing Luo – Double Bass, member of the Jury

Studies

Tha bassist Bing Luo graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music with Professor Yimin Tang. Later, he studied at The University of Tromsø in Norway. He specialized in Double Bass Performance with Professor Sewvin Haugen.

Pedagogical Activity

Prof. Bing Luo – Double Bass Educator and Performer. He is in the Department Chair of Strings (Cello, Bass, and Harp) at The Music Middle School. This school is affiliated with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He is also the postgraduate supervisor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

Professor Bing Luo is a board member of the Strings Department of the Chinese Musicians Association. He is a visiting professor at Texas Christian University (Texas, USA).

He has been invited to give masterclasses and academic lectures at several institutions. These include Texas Christian University (Texas, USA) and The University of Texas at Austin (Texas, USA). He has also visited the Interlochen Arts Academy (Michigan, USA) and San Francisco State University (California, USA). Additionally, he was invited to the 2015 Kaleidoscope Double Bass Festival (Germany). He has lectured at The Music Middle School Affiliated to the Xinghai Conservatory of Music. He has also lectured at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music.

Prof. Bing Luo also served as a jury member for the 2020 Johann Matthias Sperger Competition for Double Bass.

Professor Luo has nearly 30 years of teaching experience. His students have won more than 70 awards in major double bass competitions both domestically and internationally. Notably, his students in the youth division (15-18 years old) of the International Society of Bassists (ISB) competition have excelled. They have achieved remarkable success. Zhixiong Liu (2013), Yue Zhang (2019), and Zichen Zhang (2023) have consecutively won the first place. This achievement sets the highest record for domestically trained double bass students in top international double bass competitions. In the 2023 ISB competition, his students won all the awards in the Age 14 and under division. This marked the first time in ISB history that all winners in one division came from China.

Bing Luo’s Artistic Activity

As an orchestra musician, the bassist Bing Luo has been a guest performer with the Tromsø Symphony Orchestra.

In the realm of chamber music, he has collaborated with the musicians from Narvik Baroque Chamber Orchestra.

Professor Bing Luo was a member of the first Seoul International Alliance Orchestra in 2007. Further, he joined the Global Chinese Orchestra Alliance in 2013 and 2016.

Prod. Bing Luo’s awards

Professor Luo’s dedication to teaching has been much recognized. He possesses a profound understanding of related academic research subjects. He has received over 20 awards for outstanding teaching both domestically and internationally. In September 2023, he was honored with the Gardener Award in Xuhui District, Shanghai.

Bing Luo has published academic papers. His papers include “Intensity Training for the Left Hand of the Double Bass.” Another work is “Creating and optimization in Transplanted Works for Double Bass.” He published several of his own editions of music work. These include „Double Bass Scales and Arpeggios”. They also include „Kreutzer — 18 Studies for String Bass” and „Kayser — 36 Studies for String Bass”. Additionally, there is the „Compilation of school-based textbooks for String Department (Cello, Bass, and Harp) of The Music Middle School Affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music”.
