Introduction

Pianist Jackie Jaekyung Yoo is known for performances that excite the audience with her virtuosic vivacity and emotional warmth. Her repertoire spans from early Baroque to contemporary music; her performance of the complete Book 1 Études by Ligeti has won acclaim by such distinguished artists as Martha Argerich.

Studies

Born in South Korea, Yoo began playing the piano at age three and soon afterward won several national competitions. Shortly after enrolling at Seoul National University, she moved to Germany to continue her studies with Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, Matti Raekallio, Vladimir Krainev, and Markus Groh at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. She received German Diploma degrees in solo performance and music education as well as the Concert Artist Diploma (Konzerexamen).

She also holds an International Artist Diploma from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK, where she studied with Graham Scott.

Jackie Jaekyung Yoo is a prizewinner of nearly thirty international competitions, including

  • the Bösendorfer International Piano Competition,
  • Premio Jaén,
  • Roma International Piano Competition,
  • Ricard Viñes International Piano Competition and many others.

Artistic career

She has performed worldwide at festivals such as

  • the Bebersee Festival in Germany,
  • Pyeong-Chang Music Festival in Korea,
  • International Gümüşlük Classical Music Festival in Turkey, among many others.

Yoo has appeared as a soloist with orchestra such as

  • the Manchester Camerata,
  • Symphony Orchestra of Croatian Radio and Television,
  • Phoenix Symphony,
  • Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès.

Also an accomplished ensemble pianist, she has appeared live on radio broadcasts (e.g. In Tune on BBC Radio 3) as part of Duo Yoo + Kim, an award-winning team that has won critical acclaim for recitals at the United Nations in Geneva and at Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad in Switzerland.

Jackie is currently based in Germany and teaches at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media.
